Every Coen Brothers Movie, Ranked
Joel and Ethan Coen’s 17th movie, Hail, Caesar!, was recently released, and—SHOCKER—it’s getting pretty darn good reviews. So good that it’s one of their 10 best films, according to top critics. And that got us thinking, “What is the best Coen brothers flick ever?”
Now, using Metacritic’s unique scoring system, we’ve found the answer to that very question.
Some of these rankings might be downright surprising. (We’re talking to you, Big Lebowski fans.) But more importantly, which classic Coen brothers flick made it to No. 1?
In Tom Hanks’ one and only appearance in a Coen brothers movie, he plays Goldthwaite Higginson Dorr, a sinister southern dandy who is the criminal “mastermind” of an incompetent band of criminals. The Ladykillers is a remake of the 1955 British comedy of the same name. The only thing better than Hanks’ hilarious performance is his devilish facial hair.
"Already as dark as London soot, the comedy hardly needed work to bring it in line with the Coen brothers' sensibility, but the remake moves to a beat of its own, one unexpectedly in sync with the gospel music dominating its soundtrack." —Keith Phipps, The A.V. Club
