The 20 Best Video Games of 2020 So Far
Which games impressed professional reviewers the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed videogames released between January 1, 2020 and June 30, 2020 by Metascore. Games must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible for inclusion.
Note that ...
If a game was released on multiple platforms, we included only the version receiving the largest total number of reviews (usually, but not always, the PS4 version).
Newly released ports of games released in prior years on other platforms are excluded, unless they are substantially different from the prior release (for example, an HD remaster of a previous-gen game that also adds some new content).
Set in 17th century Japan, Team Ninja's action-RPG game Nioh received plenty of acclaim (and Dark Souls comparisons for its difficulty level) upon its 2017 release. That game's first follow-up is actually a prequel that jumps back in time by about 50 years (to 1555) but remains in Japan, centering on a new character who is half human, half Yokai. It's still hard.
“Nioh 2 shows Team Ninja at the top of their game. From it's newly added mechanics to the awesome character creator and skill trees, the amount of depth on offer is incredible. The sequel improves on the original in every conceivable way and makes it one of the best entries in the genre. While it may be sadistically difficult at times, it's wildly entertaining combat will have you going back time and time again.” —Gameplanet
