The 20 Best Video Games of 2022 So Far
Which games impressed professional reviewers the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed videogames released between January 1, 2022 and June 30, 2022 by Metascore. Games must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible for inclusion.
Note that ...
If a game was released on multiple platforms, we included only the version receiving the largest total number of reviews (usually, but not always, the PS5 or PS4 version).
Multi-game compilations and newly released ports of games released in prior years on other platforms are excluded, unless they are substantially different from the prior release(s) (for example, an HD remaster of a previous-gen game that also adds some new content). We have also excluded DLC.
Released in January as a Switch exclusive, the latest Pokémon title from developer Game Freak is a prequel to Diamond/Pearl. But unlike those games and other mainline Pokémon releases, Arceus isn't a straight RPG but adds action into the mix. You'll explore the Hisui region—that's Sinnoh in the distant past, when the concept of Pokémon Trainers didn't yet exist, Poké Balls were still a bit primitive, and battling wild Pokémon was more dangerous, and possibly lethal—to complete the region's inaugural Pokédex. Critics were generally impressed by the change in formula and the increased difficulty presented by the new battle system.
“Pokémon Legends: Arceus is one of the most innovative titles the series has seen in a long time, with the new game mechanics and features making me wonder how I’ve ever played another Pokémon game.” —Trusted Reviews
