The 20 Best New TV Shows of 2018 (So Far)
Which newcomers on the small screen have impressed reviewers the most during the first half of the year? Above, find the highest-scoring first-year TV shows (and miniseries) debuting between January 1, 2018 and June 27, 2018. Only shows with at least 7 reviews from professional critics are included.
The second Ryan Murphy series to make our list, Pose is not an anthology, but something much rarer on television: a "dance musical." The currently airing FX series explores various aspects of New York life in the 1980s, especially ball culture but also the literary scene and the rise of luxury living and excess (think Donald Trump, though Trump himself isn't a character in the show). While Evan Peters, Kate Mara, and James Van Der Beek may be the most recognizable names attached to the project, the series features the largest LGBTQ cast ever assembled for a scripted TV show—with multiple transgender actors among the series regulars.
“For all of its ballroom flash and diva fierceness, Pose is a sweet, touching drama about finding your family, your purpose, yourself. The number of transgender actors in the cast may have made history, but it’s the humanity of the stories they tell that is truly revolutionary.” —Kristen Baldwin, Entertainment Weekly
