This under-the-radar Starz series is a spy thriller with a sci-fi twist that stars J.K. Simmons. In fact, it stars two J.K. Simmonses: he plays dual roles as a low-level bureaucrat who discovers that his agency has access to a portal leading to a parallel dimension, where he has a counterpart. The cast also includes Olivia Williams, Nicholas Pinnock, Harry Lloyd, Stephen Rea, and Richard Schiff. Though they liked the series when it began despite some early bumps, critics seemed to feel that it grew even stronger as the season progressed, so you may want to jump on board now before the second season begins sometime in 2018-19.
“Counterpart moves at a deliberate pace in the early episodes, punctuated with moments of violence and surprise. It takes time for us to acclimate ourselves to the show’s concept, but once it sinks in, we’re hooked. The performances are superb, especially Simmons, who is so good as both Howard and Other Howard, he should be nominated for two best actor Emmys.” —David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle
