92 Chained Echoes

(#5) Released just a few weeks ago—making it the latest-arriving 2022 game on this list—Chained Echoes is a Kickstarter-funded indie RPG with 16-bit pixel graphics. Clearly influenced by 1990s-era Japanese-style RPGs (but the creation of German developer Matthias Linda, serving as a one-man studio), the seven-years-in-the-making game is set in a fantasy world in which three rival kingdoms are at war. Though humorous at times, the story is much darker than many of its influences, and critics seem to like how Echoes subverts some of the tropes of its genre.
