(#5) After a brief awards-qualifying run in late 2021, Norwegian drama The Worst Person in the World received a proper theatrical release in February 2022—just a few days ahead of receiving a pair of Academy Award nominations (for both Best International Feature and, more surprisingly for a foreign-language film, Best Original Screenplay). And those certainly weren't the only honors given to the concluding chapter in director Joachim Trier's "Oslo Trilogy" (following Reprise and Oslo, August 31st). Worst Person is an episodic character study that spends four years with a woman in her early thirties, played by Renate Reinsve in her first (but certainly not her last) lead performance. Trier's film began collecting accolades at its Cannes debut in the summer of 2021 (where Reinsve won best actress honors) and continued to do so through its American release the following year.

“Occasionally you see a movie that just satisfies on all fronts — the performances, the direction, the whole package. Even less occasionally you see one that does all that and moves you, too. 'The Worst Person in the World' is one of those.” —Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic
