(#9) The highest-grossing Irish-language film in history and Ireland's official submission to the Academy Awards, director Colm Bairéad's narrative feature debut is set in 1981, when a poor, neglected nine-year-old girl experiences a loving home for the first time when she is sent to spend the summer with foster parents in rural Ireland. An adaptation of an English-language novella (Foster) by Claire Keegan, The Quiet Girl made an impressive showing on the festival circuit in 2022, including winning a pair of awards at the 2022 Berlinale.
The Quiet Girl is not yet available to stream or rent but could return to North American theaters at some point in early 2023 following a qualifying run in December.
“Gorgeously realized and crafted with homespun care, this delicate and heartbreaking drama is one of the year’s best films.” —Kevin Jagernauth, The Playlist
