Meet This Year's Best Picture Contenders
If your leftover Halloween candy pile is down to a few stray pieces of Laffy Taffy* and Tootsie Rolls, it can mean only one thing: It's time for film awards season!
Which films will contend for the Oscars' biggest prize in March? To find out, we have surveyed industry experts, calculated the Metascores, and examined the top performing films at this year's major film festivals to come up with a list of 15 potential best picture contenders from 2022, plus more than a dozen bonus wildcards. In a welcome change, this year's best picture slate could include multiple films that you've heard of—in fact, it could include some of the year's most successful films at the box office. So let the guessing game begin ...
* Please take our Laffy Taffy.
What is it? A film that lives up to its title, for one thing. Directed by the Daniels duo (Swiss Army Man) and produced by the Russo brothers, Everything follows a woman (Michelle Yeoh) who is dealing with two crises: an audit by the IRS, and the potential destruction of the multiverse. The resulting trip through parallel universes involves a parallel journey through multiple genres as the film blends martial arts action, comedy, sci-fi, drama, and even animation.
Why is it a contender? It's one of the most inventive and exhilarating films in recent memory, and it wasn't just critics who loved it: Everything is the biggest box office hit to date for A24, grossing over $100 million against a miniscule budget. The last indie film to gross more than $100 million? Parasite—a best picture winner.
What are its chances? Better than you would think for a wild indie action-comedy released so early in the year (March): Most experts give Everything a strong chance at cracking the best picture field. It's also likely to secure nominations for its original screenplay (a category it could very well win) and for Yeoh's memorable performance.
When can I see it? Everything is available to rent or purchase from digital storefronts and is also available on DVD/Blu-ray.
