Meet This Year's Best Picture Contenders
If your leftover Halloween candy pile is down to a few stray pieces of Laffy Taffy* and Tootsie Rolls, it can mean only one thing: It's time for film awards season!
Which films will contend for the Oscars' biggest prize in March? To find out, we have surveyed industry experts, calculated the Metascores, and examined the top performing films at this year's major film festivals to come up with a list of 15 potential best picture contenders from 2022, plus more than a dozen bonus wildcards. In a welcome change, this year's best picture slate could include multiple films that you've heard of—in fact, it could include some of the year's most successful films at the box office. So let the guessing game begin ...
* Please take our Laffy Taffy.
What is it? A Spotlight for the #MeToo era that follows a pair of New York Times reporters (played by Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan) as they investigate sexual misconduct allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein.
Why is it a contender? Timely. Important. True story. Investigative journalism. Those are certainly signifiers of a potential best picture nominee.
What are its chances? Not as good as first thought. It might be (in a way) a film about the film industry, but it certainly doesn't showcase a side of the industry that anyone is proud of—especially when the Academy has been such a huge supporter of Weinstein in the past. And unlike best picture winner Spotlight, which wowed critics, She Said has been met with less enthusiastic (though still positive) reviews. Will the film find an audience in theaters, or will it quickly disappear from the cultural consciousness? The answer to that question may dictate its Oscar chances.
When can I see it? She Said opens in theaters on November 18.
