In the gallery on this page, we rank the highest-scoring first-year TV shows (including limited series and specials) debuting between January 1, 2022 and June 30, 2022. Only shows with at least 7 reviews from professional critics are included.
Both establishing the show's characters premise and breezing through a taut, six-episode serialized story in its first season, this British spy drama is an adaptation of the acclaimed 2010 novel of the same name by Mike Herron that kicked off an ongoing series of books. Like those books, Apple's series revolves around Slough House, a low-level division of MI5 that houses agents who have been discarded after making costly mistakes and hitting a career dead end. Gary Oldman stars (in his first regular TV role) as Slough House chief Jackson Lamb alongside Kristin Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce, Olivia Cooke, and Jack Lowden. The TV adaptation features an original Mick Jagger theme song and comes from Will Smith (the Veep writer, not the rapper/actor/slapper) and also counts Justified's Graham Yost among its producers. Two seasons were filmed back to back, so you shouldn't have long to wait for the next chapter.
“Slow Horses’s first season is chock full of characters, lines, and moments that will work brilliantly for fans of spy thrillers—not gritty spy thrillers, not action-packed spy thrillers, but straight-laced, classic, by-the-book ones. ... This conventional addition to an already crowded genre counts as a confirmed kill.” —Alison Foreman, The A.V. Club
