The 20 Best New TV Shows of 2020 So Far
Which newcomers on the small screen have impressed reviewers the most during the first half of the year? Above, find the highest-scoring first-year TV shows (and miniseries) debuting between January 1, 2020 and June 30, 2020. Only shows with at least 7 reviews from professional critics are included.
Like 2019's Years and Years, it's another HBO miniseries that holds a mirror up to our current dark times, though this one heads to the past (rather than the near future) to do so—and enlists the network's most acclaimed creator. David Simon's latest HBO project (which finds him re-teaming with frequent collaborator Ed Burns) is a six-part adaptation of Philip Roth's 2004 novel that imagines an alternate American history in which Charles Lindbergh is elected president in 1940, leading America on a path toward fascism. Winona Ryder, John Turturro, Morgan Spector, and Zoe Kazan head the cast, while Minkie Spiro (The Deuce) and Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing) split directing duties.
“Simon and Burns craft their story with remarkable texture, tracking the nation’s downward spiral from inside a besieged family’s living room. ... The final hour is one of the most breathtakingly tense episodes of television I’ve ever seen, carrying you on a dark journey through a country on fire.” —Darren Franich, Entertainment Weekly
