One of a handful of new Star Trek series in the works at streaming service CBS All Access (our sister company)—with the animated Lower Decks up next in August—the uneven but decent Picard returns fan favorite Patrick Stewart as former (yes, former) Starfleet Captain/Admiral Jean-Luc Picard in a story that picks up over two decades after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation and its various film spinoffs. Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Alison Pill, Isa Briones, and Harry Treadaway also star, and Star Trek veterans Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes (who also directs several episodes), Marina Sirtis, Jonathan del Arco (the former Borg member "Hugh"), and Jeri Ryan make appearances. A second season should arrive next year.
“Stewart’s just lovely in this. He has spent his post-'Next Generation' and post-'X-Men' career staking out various corners of the indie and studio film world, to mixed success. Picard suits him wonderfully, still. Just as the first round of 'Star Trek' movies, the ones with William Shatner and the gang, made hay on the old idea of old dogs learning new tricks, 'Picard' too has some of that in its synthetic DNA. And it works, because the actors are the right actors, and it’s treated seriously but without a crushing sense of solemnity.” —Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
