The 20 Best New TV Shows of 2016
Below are the highest-scoring first-year TV series debuting in the United States between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016. Shows are ranked by Metascore (an average of grades from top professional critics on a 0-100 scale) prior to rounding, and any programs with fewer than 7 reviews are excluded. (Note that limited series, as well as TV movies and specials, are ranked in a separate list.)
FX's acclaimed comedy Louie is on an indefinite hiatus. One reason for the delay is star Louis C.K.'s involvement in four other shows, three of which can be found on this list. He serves as a writer, director, and producer on Better Things, which is a vehicle for his Louie co-star (and co-writer) Pamela Adlon, here playing Sam, a working actress and single mother of three girls in Los Angeles. Critics think the result is not only funny, but also one of the more interesting and insightful portrayals of motherhood on television.
