The 20 Best New TV Shows of 2016
Below are the highest-scoring first-year TV series debuting in the United States between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016. Shows are ranked by Metascore (an average of grades from top professional critics on a 0-100 scale) prior to rounding, and any programs with fewer than 7 reviews are excluded. (Note that limited series, as well as TV movies and specials, are ranked in a separate list.)
In recent years, so many of TV's best "comedies" may have a familiar 30-minute run time and moments of humor, only to play more like dramas overall. Not so with Angie Tribeca, possibly TV's silliest newcomer in 2016. (That's not intended as an insult.)
Much more Sledge Hammer! or Police Squad! than Brooklyn Nine-Nine, this slapstick cop comedy comes from Steve Carell and his wife Nancy Carell. Rashida Jones and Hayes MacArthur star as members of the LAPD's elite Really Heinous Crimes Unit (alongside familiar faces like Jere Burns and Deon Cole), while guests have included the likes of Bill Murray, Adam Scott, David Koechner, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, Keegan-Michael Key, and James Franco. TBS managed to air two seasons in 2016 (including a first season which debuted as a 24-hour marathon), and a third is due in 2017.
