This Netflix original from India follows a man (Aditya Modak) who has devoted seemingly every moment of his entire life to mastering traditional Indian classical music, only to suffer a crisis of confidence. The decades-spanning, character-focused drama from director Chaitanya Tamhane (best known for 2015's excellent Court) focuses on the relationship between him and his tutor (Arun Dravid, like Modak an expert classical vocalist in real life), and should be relatable to anyone whose dreams are bigger than their talents.
“The Disciple is a great example of when filmmaking and acting styles complement each other, and it’s that bond that feels to be a significant part of what makes Tamhane’s film so special, so resonant.” —Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com
