Above, we rank the best-reviewed movies released in theaters* or on digital/VOD/streaming outlets between January 1, 2020 and June 30, 2020. Films are ranked by Metascore and must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.
* Commonly found in urban locations during the Before Times, a theater was an enclosed public space where strangers came together to watch films projected on a screen.
Last year's Tribeca Film Festival winner (in the international competition) is a Korean coming-of-age drama set in 1994 when a lonely eighth-grader (Ji-hu Park), seeking an escape from her troubled home life and problems at school, finally finds a friend in an unlikely place. Bora Kim's semi-autobiographical debut film also collected awards for best actress (for Park) and best cinematography (Kang Gook-hyun) at the festival, in addition to earning praise from reviewers.
