and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – July 3, 2019
Which films have impressed critics the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed movies released in theaters between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2019 by Metascore. Films must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.
Director Joe Talbot won a directing award (with his film also picking up a Special Jury Award) at Sundance for his feature directorial debut, a tale of a gentrifying San Francisco that is inspired by the true story of Talbot’s friend and star, Jimmie Fails. A lifelong resident of the city, Fails’ main desire in life is to reclaim the Victorian house built by his grandfather. When he gets his chance, he struggles to reconnect to his family and the community that has disappeared around him.
“A strikingly immersive movie, a slow burn filled with subtleties and nuance, with its message nestled in the details as much as the greater story. While other filmmakers have effectively captured San Francisco’s landmarks and topography, story co-writers Fails and Talbot seem to be filming San Francisco’s streets with a microscope.” —Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle
