The 20 Best Movies of 2018 So Far
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – June 30, 2018
Which films have impressed critics the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed movies released in theaters between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2018 by Metascore. Films must have more than 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.
For the second year in a row, we have an unexpected horror hit in the first half of the calendar. Following in the footsteps of Jordan Peele's Get Out is A Quiet Place, by far the most successful directorial effort to date from one-time The Office star John Krasinski (Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, The Hollars). Krasinski stars alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, in this thriller about a family whose only way to survive is by being silent—because any noise will wake deadly creatures that hunt what they hear. The film is almost dialogue-free and also stars Wonderstruck’s Millicent Simmonds as the couple's deaf daughter.
“As a celebration of the physical expressiveness and visual storytelling of silent cinema, A Quiet Place speaks volumes without a word being uttered.” —Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post
