Original: Whiplash (2013), directed by Damien Chazelle
After his semi-autobiographical short film about a young drummer and an abusive music teacher won the Jury Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, director Damien Chazelle re-enlisted star J.K. Simmons for a full-length treatment of the same story. The resulting 2014 feature not only won two more awards at Sundance, it also went on to score five Oscar nominations, winning three (including a trophy for Simmons).
