Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. Original: The Dirk Diggler Story (1988), directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
Effectively the first film Paul Thomas Anderson ever made, his high school-filmed short The Dirk Diggler Story covers roughly the same plot and some of the same dialogue as the grown-up Anderson's second feature would in 1997, but employs a goofier mockumentary style. Both films feature the same lead character, who in turn is loosely inspired by the life of real-life porn star John Holmes.
