30 Best Movie Remakes (and Reboots) of the Past 30 Years
Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. (Note that a movie must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.)
Original: The Quiet American (1958), directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Graham Greene's 1955 novel about growing American involvement in colonial Vietnam has been adapted twice for the big screen. The first time was by Oscar-winning director Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All About Eve) shortly after the novel's publication. While that adaptation was somewhat well received by critics, the 2002 remake by Australian director Phillip Noyce (fresh from the release of his acclaimed drama Rabbit-Proof Fence) is considered the better film, and is much truer to Greene's original story and intent while painting America's actions in a more negative light than the first film.
