30 Best Movie Remakes (and Reboots) of the Past 30 Years
Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. (Note that a movie must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.)
Original: various, beginning with ▣ Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), directed by Robert Wise
Seven years after the 10th Star Trek feature, director J.J. Abrams rebooted the then-43-year-old sci-fi franchise with a film featuring the characters of the original television series played by an (almost) entirely new cast. The director's emphasis on action seemed to convince a wider audience to see the film—Star Trek ultimately grossed over $380 million, still an all-time high for the franchise—even if it alienated some longtime fans by jettisoning the well-established timeline.
Two sequels followed the 2009 reboot, and two more are currently in development—including one that may be directed by Quentin Tarantino.
