The Freshman 15: 2019's Best Debut Albums
Later this month, we'll release our final list of 2019's overall best albums. But our best of 2019 coverage continues right now with a look at the year's top newcomers in music.
Above is our list of the 15 best-reviewed debut albums of 2019, ranked by Metascore. Note that albums must have at least 7 reviews—and be a full LP, rather than an EP—to be eligible for inclusion. Albums are ranked by Metascore prior to rounding (based on scores as of December 7, 2019).
(#13) The top-selling debut album of the decade, When We All Fall Asleep would be an impressive achievement for an artist of any age—let alone for one who is just 17 years old (at least for a few more days). The Los Angeles native is the first recording artist born in the 21st century to land a #1 album, and she capped her busy 2019 a few weeks ago by earning six Grammy nominations.
“A brave and fortuitous debut album from the LA teen, capturing the hopes, fears and vulnerabilities of an entire generation. The genius in this record is its unaffected relatability.” —Clash Music
