The Freshman 15: 2019's Best Debut Albums
Later this month, we'll release our final list of 2019's overall best albums. But our best of 2019 coverage continues right now with a look at the year's top newcomers in music.
Above is our list of the 15 best-reviewed debut albums of 2019, ranked by Metascore. Note that albums must have at least 7 reviews—and be a full LP, rather than an EP—to be eligible for inclusion. Albums are ranked by Metascore prior to rounding (based on scores as of December 7, 2019).
(#5) After fronting the band Phantom Limb, performing with Massive Attack, and lending her voice to tracks by Chemical Brothers (among others), English singer-guitarist Yola Quartey teamed up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys to record this full-length solo debut. She was rewarded with three Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist.
“Yola can hold her own with the best, and it’s likely this terrific album will end up as one of the most impressive debuts of this or recent years. Its combustive combination of talent, songwriting and sympathetic yet bold production makes Yola’s release one of the finest soul/country fusions in recent memory.” —American Songwriter
