After three live-action films in the 1990s, a CGI adventure in 2007, and two reboot films in 2014 and 2016, maybe the seventh theatrical release based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics will be the one to please critics and fans. If early indications hold true, critics are satisfied by this cleverly animated feature directed by Jeff Rowe (Metacritic Must-See The Mitchells vs. The Machines) and Kyle Spears, written by Rowe, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. By focusing on the “Teenage” in TMNT (and voice casting appropriately), the film creates relatable adolescent characters and thrusts them, with the aid of junior reporter April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri), into a battle against other mutants led by Ice Cube’s Superfly, who believe the only way to live with humans is to kill them. Taught by their rat master Splinter (Jackie Chan), the Ninja Turtles feel differently.
