Writer-director Sophie Barthes (Cold Souls, Madame Bovary) took home the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Sundance Institute Science-in-Film prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival for this sci-fi romantic comedy about Rachel (Emilia Clarke) and Alvy (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a couple who decide to have a baby through the Womb Center, which offers pregnancy via a pod. Rachel, a rising executive initially excited by the prospect, struggles to connect with her incubating child, but Alvy, a botanist skeptical of the whole operation, finds himself surprisingly comfortable with the pod. Critics fond of the film believe Clarke and Ejiofor bring a relatable chemistry to the sci-fi concept.
