Perhaps the recent ratings controversy (the MPA gave Passages an NC-17 but distributor MUBI will release the film unrated and uncut) will provide a boost to the latest feature from director Ira Sachs (Keep the Lights On, Love is Strange, Litlte Men). After a rare misstep with 2019’s Frankie, Sachs is back in fine form with this story, co-written with Mauricio Zacharias and Arlene Langmann, about a German filmmaker (Franz Rogowski) who is married to a man (Ben Whishaw) but begins a passionate affair with a woman (Adèle Exarchopoulos). Count this film as a challenger to the “sex scenes are unnecessary in film” lobby.
