At the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, the Quentin Tarantino-led jury awarded the Grand Prix to Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy. The film went on to worldwide acclaim, introduced Park to a global audience (whom he has rewarded with The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave), and even inspired a much less successful Spike Lee remake starring Josh Brolin in 2013. A brutal revenge thriller filled with indelible moments—star Choi Min-sik eating a live octopus and the single-shot hallway hammer fight come to mind—this cult classic follows Oh Dae-Su as he tries to find his captors after being kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years. Originally released in South Korea in 2003, the film will get a 20th anniversary theatrical re-release in restored and remastered 4K.
