24 Films to See in April
While this April lacks the big-budget tentpoles that are typical of the season, it makes up for it with a diverse array of promising films, ranging from a Ben Affleck crowd-pleaser to festival hits to intriguing new titles from Ari Aster, Kelly Reichardt, Cristian Mungiu, David Lowery, and more. Oh, and did we mention that there's even a good new Nicolas Cage film? And a good Evil Dead sequel?

Composer Pierre Földes makes his directing debut (while also providing the score) with this animated adaptation of a Haruki Murakami book of short stories. Recent Murakami adaptations include Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar-winning Drive My Car and Lee Chang-dong’s Burning, but Földes leans more into the absurdity of Murakami’s writing (including a giant talking frog) while still keeping the focus on relationships with this set of interconnected stories taking place in the aftermath of the 2011 Tokyo earthquake.
