The new film from Makoto Shinkai (Your Name., Weathering with You) follows 17-year-old Suzume, who lives on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu with her aunt after losing her mother as a little girl. When she meets a mysterious young man named Souta, together they open a door letting loose calamities all over Japan, resulting in a journey to close all the doors to prevent further disasters. It’s another incredibly imaginative work from Shinkai, who, once again, uses spectacularly beautiful animation, this time with more comedic touches, to navigate themes that have appeared in his previous work: the barriers between people, how people deal with loss and grief, people’s connection to the environment, and the threats to our world.
