24 Films to See in April
While this April lacks the big-budget tentpoles that are typical of the season, it makes up for it with a diverse array of promising films, ranging from a Ben Affleck crowd-pleaser to festival hits to intriguing new titles from Ari Aster, Kelly Reichardt, Cristian Mungiu, David Lowery, and more. Oh, and did we mention that there's even a good new Nicolas Cage film? And a good Evil Dead sequel?

For her follow-up to First Cow, Kelly Reichardt reunites with writer Jonathan Raymond and actress Michelle Williams, who collaborated with her on Wendy and Lucy and Meeks Cutoff, for a contemporary tale about a ceramicist (Williams) preparing for a show and attempting to balance her creative life with the demands of her family (Judd Hirsch, Maryann Plunkett, John Magaro), her inattentive landlord (Hong Chau), who also happens to be a rising artist, and an injured pigeon. Some critics believe Williams, Chau, and Hirsch, all nominated this year for Oscars, might have given better performances under Reichardt’s guidances in this deceptively funny and warm look at the work and wonder in creative pursuits.
