The decorations at your local mall may say "Christmas," but the movie release schedule suggests a different time of year: Awards Season. Russell, Quentin Tarantino, Todd Haynes, and Alejandro González Iñárritu—into what is already shaping up to be a crowded field of contenders. Actually, history suggests that the next best picture winner may already be playing in a theater near you. No December release has won the top Oscar in over a decade.

At one point considered a lock for multiple nominations, this Danny Boyle-Aaron Sorkin collaboration has lost a lot of its luster thanks to its unexpectedly disastrous box office performance. (The fact that it is the third Steve Jobs movie to reach theaters in the past two years may have something to do with that.) Critics did like it, but that may not be enough to sway Academy voters to overlook the film's "bomb" status.
