Russell, Quentin Tarantino, Todd Haynes, and Alejandro González Iñárritu—into what is already shaping up to be a crowded field of contenders. Actually, history suggests that the next best picture winner may already be playing in a theater near you. No December release has won the top Oscar in over a decade.

Out of the two pop music biopics released this summer, this look at troubled Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson (played in the film, rather unusually, by both John Cusack and Paul Dano) is the one that flew under the radar—perhaps too much so to earn a best picture nomination. Still, reviews for Bill Pohlad's first directorial effort in 25 years were very strong, and Oscar nominations for Pohlad or his cast are not out of the question.
