Scatman Crothers
Biography: Scatman Crothers, (born Benjamin Crothers), was a lanky black character actor with a big, toothy smile and an appealing character. At age 14 he started singing and playing guitar and drums in speakeasies. He toured with his own band through the Midwest in the mid '30s; when the band got an engagement in Los Angeles, he began to appear on Dixie Showboat, a local TV show. Crothers began in films with Meet Me at the Fair (1952). He is best known for his work in TV dramas, miniseries, and sitcoms; he had a continuing role (as Louie the garbage collector) on the '70s TV sit-com Chico and the Man.
