Rita Gam

Biography: Born Rita Mackay, she appeared on Broadway in 1948 and on TV in 1950. Her onscreen debut was The Thief (1952) opposite Ray Milland (the film is notable as one of the few non-talking sound films ever made). Gam went on to a sporadic film career. Strikingly beautiful, she was typecast in decorative roles in Hollywood, prompting her to work primarily in Europe after the mid '50s. For her work in a film version of Sartre's No Exit (1962) she won a Berlin Festival award. In the early '70s she went back to making occasional Hollywood films in supporting roles. She married and divorced director Sidney Lumet.
