Biography: Michael Kanin was born on February 1, 1910 in Rochester, New York. He was the older brother of Garson Kanin, a highly acclaimed writer, producer and director. Along with his brother, Michael undertook a creative apprenticeship in writing and acting at the Catskill resort. In 1939, he signed a screenwriting contract with RKO. At RKO, he frequently collaborated with Fay Mitchell, who later went on to become his wife. Teaming up with Ring Lardner Jr. resulted in success for Michael and, in 1941, he won an Academy Award for MGM's production Woman of the Year. In 1948, he also co-produced the immensely popular melodrama A Double Life with his wife, Fay. In 1951, he made his directorial debut with the film When I Grow Up. He also earned a best screenplay Oscar nomination for the 1958 comedy Teacher's Pet. However, Michael failed to keep up with the changing nature of cinema and taste of audiences in the 1960s.
