Lloyd Nolan

Biography: A stage actor by the late '20s, Nolan began appearing in films in the mid '30s, most notably the Mae West comedy Every Day's a Holiday and Robert Florey's King of Alcatraz. In 1940 Nolan starred in Michael Shayne, Private Detective, and portrayed the sleuth in six more B-films at 20th Century-Fox; he also appeared in many of his finest films in the '40s, including Henry Hathaway's Johnny Apollo and The House on 92nd Street, Anatole Litvak's Blues in the Night, Lewis Seiler's Guadalcanal Diary, Elia Kazan's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Robert Montgomery's Lady in the Lake, and William Keighley's The Street with No Name. In the '50s Nolan began acting on television, winning an Emmy award for recreating his stage role of Captain Queeg in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, and starring in the series Martin Kane, Private Eye from 1951-52 and Special Agent 7 from 1958-59; from 1968-71, he costarred in the sitcom Julia with Diahann Carroll.
