John Newland

Biography: John Newland was the son of a Cincinnati newspaper drama critic. After gleaning valuable experience in network radio and on the New York stage, Newland came to films in the late 1940s, playing Algy in Tom Conway's Bulldog Drummond "B" pictures. Newland became an inescapable presence in the formative years of network television, appearing as one of the "stock company" on Robert Montgomery Presents and frequently guesting on The Loretta Young Show, which he also directed on occasion. Eventually dismissing acting, Newland became increasingly involved in producing and directing as the 1950s segued into 1960s. From 1959 to 1961, he hosted, directed and co-produced the classic psychic phenomena TV anthology One Step Beyond; seventeen years later, he revived the property as the syndicated weekly The Next Step Beyond.He also directed individual episodes of other TV series, notably Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and helmed such made-for-TV movies as Crawlspace (1971), A Sensitive,John Newland was the son of a Cincinnati newspaper drama critic.
