Before Pro-Wrestling

Chris grew up in Sunnyside, Queens, New York. As a child, he loved wrestling and even attended the WWF show that Hulk Hogan won his first WWF Title at. From that night on, he wanted to be a wrestler. Chris graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1992. Before becoming a full-time wrestler, Chris was a physical therapist.
Independent Wrestling

Chris wrestled weekends and late-nights to start, wrestling in Smokey Mountain Wrestling, ECW, WWF and Memphis before signing with WCW sometime in May 1995. Early WCW Once in WCW, Chris was used just to put other guys over. This continued for a few months, until he got the Men at Work gimmick. Originally consisting of Chris Kanyon and Mark Starr, the team did hold a win over then WCW Tag Team Champions Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck, but saw little other success. Mark Starr was later replaced with Mike Winner, but this new team broke up for good a few weeks later. Kanyon's gimmick in the team was he'd waste time measuring ropes and such, until he got tagged in. Mortis Kanyon was then given the gimmick of Mortis, a masked wrestler who was a key player in the "Blood Runs Cold" angle, pitting Mortis and Wrath, with manager James Vandenberg against Glacier and Ernest Miller. The feud ended at Bash at the Beach 1997, where Mortis and Wrath defeated Glacier and Ernest Miller after Mortis kicked Glacier in the sternum with a chain wrapped around his foot. The team would go on to have a brief feud with the Faces of Fear, before Wrath was injured and Mortis continued on alone. Mortis got a few shots at US Champion Diamond Dallas Page, but was defeated each time. In February 1998, Mortis asked Raven for membership in the Flock, but Raven said he would allow Mortis in only if he defeated DDP and get back Raven's US Title for him. Mortis was defeated by Page, so Raven DDTed him on the entryway ramp. Shortly thereafter, Mortis unmasked and returned as Kanyon, seeking revenge against Raven. Kanyon In early 1998, Raven was involved in a feud with US Champion Diamond Dallas Page. During this time period, Raven was being attacked by an unknown assailant. The attacker would attack when Raven least expected it, but no one ever found out his identity. At Slamboree '98, Raven faced DDP in a Bowery deathmatch in a steel cage. Duringthe match, Raven's Flock was beaten and handcuffed by a riot cop. DDP defeated Raven and left the cage while the riot cop entered the cage and handcuffed Raven to the cage. While Raven was helpless, the riot cop took off his helmet to reveal that he was Mortis before removing the Mortis mask and hitting Raven with a vicious chair shot. The following night on Nitro, a video was played of Kanyon telling Raven he would come after him "anytime, anywhere, as anyone". For the next month, Kanyon did just that. He attacked Raven at every opportunity he had, always in a different disguise, always escaping before the Flock could stop him. Kanyon also debuted several new moves, so he was nick-named "the Innovator of Offense". Raven decided to sign his friend, Saturn, to face Kanyon at the Great American Bash '98. At the Great American Bash, Kanyon defeated Saturn, but was DDTed by Raven after the match. Raven then ordered the Flock to attack Saturn for failing him. Saturn and Kanyon found themselves on the same side for a short time, but rather than team up, they always fought each other, seemingly fighting each other over who got to fight Raven. They had several 3 way matches, but Raven always seemed to win due to Saturn and Kanyon fighting each other. At Road Wild '98, Saturn was victorious in a 3 way match, but soon found himself against both Raven and Kanyon, who had formed an alliance. It was speculated that Kanyon only fought Raven to prove he was worthy of membership in the Flock. Saturn defeated Raven at Fall Brawl '98, freeing the Flock in the process. Raven was lost after losing the Flock and for a time he entered into a deep depression, losing a lot of matches. Raven's depression also dragged Kanyon down in tag team match, even costing them a match against the Armstrong Brothers on Nitro. Kanyon finally snapped and told Raven to snap out of it, before revealing Raven's rich childhood and how he grew up in Palm Springs, Florida. During this time, Raven's mother showed up, begging Raven to go home and get help, which he finally agreed to. Kanyon went along and watched Raven while his mom was gone. During one of her absences, Raven revealed to Kanyon that he was never depressed and it was all a ruse to get to his mom. Soon after, they returned to WCW, but Kanyon took time off from WCW to help film the Jesse Ventura movie for NBC, in which he got to appear as Mortis. While Kanyon was gone, Raven began teaming with Saturn again in a feud over the WCW Tag Titles with the teams of Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko and Rey Mysterio Jr. and Billy Kidman. Kanyon returned at Slamboree '99 to help them win the Titles and the trio began defending the belts as together. Shortly after winning the belts, Raven was injured at the hands of DDP and Bam Bam Bigelow. Kanyon offered to help Saturn defend the belts and the match was signed. Later in the show, Kanyon was seen unconscious backstage and it was assumed that DDP and Bigelow had taken him out. Saturn insisted on defending the belts on his own and was holding his own against the two when Kanyon came down to try to help. Kanyon was tagged in and almost immediately was pinned by DDP. The following week, Chris Benoit and Ric Flair were challenging DDP and Bigelow for the Tag Titles when Flair abandoned his partner. Saturn came down to help Benoit and his team managed to pull off the win. Kanyon came down to congratulate Saturn, only to betray him with the Flatliner. Then WCW President, Ric Flair, ordered the Titles returned to DDP and Bigelow and allowed them to defend the belts as a trio with Chris Kanyon. The Triad The Triad was not through with Chris Benoit and Perry Saturn and continued a heated feud with them over the Tag Titles, trading several wins. At the Great American Bash '99, Kanyon and DDP defeated Perry Saturn and Chris Benoit to give Kanyon his first WCW Championship. The feud continued another month, with the Triad foiling severals attempts by Buff Bagwell, Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit to win the US Title from Ric Flair's undeserving son, David. The Triad again defeated Chris Benoit and Perry Saturn at Bash at the Beach '99, but soon after Ric Flair lost control of WCW to Sting and the Triad was no longer allowed to defend the belts as a trio. To make matters worse, Booker T and Stevie Ray had reformed Harlem Heat and the Triad failed to prevent Chris Benoit from winning the US Title from David Flair. DDP challenged Benoit to a US Title match at Road Wild '99 and Benoit accepted. This would prove to be a mistake, as Harlem Heat were granted a Tag Title shot at the PPV. At Road Wild '99, Kanyon and Bam Bam Bigelow lost the Titles to Harlem Heat and DDP lost in his US Title match with Chris Benoit, despite intereference from the rest of the Triad. Kanyon and Bam Bam Bigelow aided DDP in a feud with Goldberg, but Kanyon's involvment was minimal for the rest of '99 due to him working on the Warner Bros. film, Ready to Rumble. The Triad drifted apart, although Chris did make a surprise return at WCW Mayhem to help Kimberly, DDP's wife, in her match against David Flair. Chris "Champagne" Kanyon When Chris Kanyon returned from Hollywood, it was obvious he had been changed. He now enjoyed the finer things in life: expensive cars, beautiful women and, of course, champagne. He was now escorted to the ring by several women and his agent, Mr. Biggs. His change in attitude angered his former Triad partners, who said he had turned his back on Jersey and was a sell-out. Chris defeated both of them in singles matches and was victorious in a triangle match between them thanks to his new weapon: a champagne bottle to the head. Before CCK had the chance to gain momentum off of these wins, he dissappeared from WCW TV and would not return until April 10th, when Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo returned. Positively Kanyon Monday Nitro on April 10, 2000 marked the return of Kanyon to WCW after a short hiatus. Most of the WCW roster, Kanyon among them, looked on as Vince Russo outlined his plans for the "New Blood", and then revealed his alliance with Eric Bischoff. Kanyon's old friend, Diamond Dallas Page, became a prime target of the newly formed alliance, and it appeared as if Kanyon would be on the side of the New Blood in the war against the Millionaires' Club. Bischoff and Russo were in for a surprise, however, when Kanyon assisted DDP against Jeff Jarrett on the April 12 edition of Thunder. He continued to assist his friend over the next few weeks, and it seemed that his alliance with Page was solid. At Slamboree on May 7, 2000, Kanyon was disqualified in his match against Mike Awesome. Later in the evening, Awesome involved himself in DDP and Jeff Jarrett's triple cage match, and Kanyon came out to even the odds. He was rewarded for his efforts by getting tossed off the second tier of the cage by Mike Awesome. In one of the most frightening bumps in wrestling history, he crashed through the entrance ramp below. The following night on Nitro, WCW showed footage of DDP sitting in Kanyon's hospital room, obviously miserable over what had happened to his friend. He was subsequently attacked by Eric Bischoff and company, and the audience was left to speculate on what horrible fate would befall the helpless Kanyon at the hands of Bischoff's men. On the May 17 edition of Thunder, Mike Tenay interviewed a very subdued Chris Kanyon in his hospital room, and after Kanyon said that he wanted to wrestle again, but that he needed first to concentrate on just walking again, Tenay reminded him that Page was walking around while Kanyon was confined to a hospital bed. The Great American Bash on June 11 proved to be a turning point. DDP brought a wheelchair-bound Kanyon, complete with halo, to ringside to watch his ambulance match against Mike Awesome. Several minutes into the match, Eric Bischoff appeared and threatened Kanyon, which brought DDP immediately to his aid. DDP was immediately hit with his own signature maneuver, the Diamond Cutter, by Kanyon. Page was then loaded into the waiting ambulance by Kanyon and Awesome. In an interview the next night on Nitro, Page appeared to retire. Kanyon would later reveal that Eric Bischoff had promised him he would go farther in the business without DDP, and that to do this, he had to take DDP's place. Rather than simply take over Page's place in the company, Kanyon seemed intent on taking over Page's entire life. Positively Kanyon was born. In the weeks that followed, Kanyon seemed to snap, appearing first in a long blond wig reminiscent of DDP's former hair later with his own hair dyed blond, carrying a doctored copy of Page's book, Positively Page. The book now featured a photo of Kanyon on the cover and was retitled Positively Kanyon. It also housed a brick, and was used frequently as a foreign object. The Diamond Cutter was renamed the Kanyon Kutter, and was applied liberally to many an unsuspecting bystander, caterer, cameraman, wrestler, and even Judy Bagwell. The assault on Judy Bagwell, while deemed forgivable by many, plunged Chris into the middle of a feud with Buff Bagwell. The feud culminated on August 13 at the New Blood Rising pay per view in a "Judy Bagwell on a Forklift" (originally "on a pole", however, as Kanyon said, he couldn't find a pole that would hold the old battle axe, so he had to get a forklift) match, the stipulation being that if Chris won the match, Judy Bagwell would be forced to be his valet. Despite interference from David Arquette, Bagwell won the match. Following New Blood Rising, Kanyon again began a long hiatus from action, and would not be seen in the ring again until February 2001. The end of WCW.. or the beginning? Chris returned on the February 5th Nitro, attacking DDP after DDP's match with Scott Steiner. The following week, DDP challenged Kanyon, saying he would take him on anytime, any place. At the SuperBrawl Revenge PPV, Chris would do just that, replacing Jeff Jarrett in his match with DDP. After some interference from Jarrett, Kanyon defeated DDP with the Flatliner. The following night on Nitro, DDP would get a bit of revenge by defeating Kanyon in a rematch. Kanyon was not through with DDP, as he teamed with Buff Bagwell to take on DDP and The Cat. The issue between DDP and Kanyon was put on the back burner, as Kanyon had put The Cat's assistant, Ms. Jones, in the hospital after a Kanyon Kutter. The Cat wanted revenge and even stepped down from his commissioner position to pursue his revenge. On March 18th, at the Greed PPV, The Cat would get some payback when he defeated Kanyon.
