Arthur O'Connell

Biography: A stage performer in the '30s, O'Connell began acting in films at the end of the decade. In the '40s he appeared in small roles in such outstanding films as Orson Welles' Citizen Kane, Frank Capra's State of the Union, Jules Dassin's Naked City, and Abraham Polonsky's Force of Evil. O'Connell had several of his most memorable performances in the '50s, with Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for Joshua Logan's Picnic and Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder, and impressive supporting roles in Logan's Bus Stop, Richard Quine's Operation Mad Ball, Anthony Mann's Man of the West, and Blake Edwards' Operation Petticoat. His notable films in the last two decades of his career include Capra's Pocketful of Miracles, George Pal's The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao, Edwards' The Great Race, Richard Fleischer's Fantastic Voyage, and Ronald Neame's The Poseidon Adventure.
