Anthony Newley

Biography: A child actor in the mid '40s, Newley appeared in such notable British films as Peter Ustinov's fantasy Vice Versa and David Dean's Oliver Twist; his adult roles in the '50s include Jose Ferrer's The Cockleshell Heroes and Robert Parrish's Fire Down Below. In 1968 Newley starred in, produced, directed, co-scripted, and co-composed the songs for his X-rated musical Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness?; he also helmed the generation-gap drama Summertree. Newley's later films include Mr. Quilp, a musical adaptation of Dicken's The Old Curiosity Shop, for which he also wrote the songs, and Rod Amateau's The Garbage Pail Kids Movie.
