In scratching their own itch, Xiu Xiu have made a brave record.

The amount of ground covered here is a testament to the band’s talent; that they can sound equally at home on all these streets is a testament to their elasticity. What is even more compelling is how Stewart, Angela Seo, and David Kendrick make each of these tracks sound like Xiu Xiu.

They know how to tackle them [cover songs], so they still sound as vibrant and exciting as the original but add that something extra so they sound, and feel, like a Xiu Xiu song.

The result is music that feels dreamlike and at times, feverishly nightmarish, occupying multiple emotional and sonic spaces at once. Xiu Motha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1 is uncompromising and unsparing, driven by a kind of manic clarity that refuses prediction.

They whack the volume up to 11 million, and warp familiar songs with a blend of manic posturing and slick postering. [Mar 2026, p.105]
