Campbell's lyrics might not match Petty's poetry, but the immediacy, energy and spirit are all there. [May 2020, p.95]

In short: 13 hugely enjoyable songs that all sound like old friends. [Dec 2020, p.85]

Wreckless Abandon is great fun, infused with the characteristic boogie and swagger of Campbell's guitar, and heavily in hock to his obvious formative influences. [Apr 2020, p.27]

Campbell chose to embrace his personal sound, owning it, and refining it. It’s not an easy task but Campbell and the Dirty Knobs take it seriously.

His cadence and phrasing often recall those of Petty, so initially it's not hard to imagine these tunes as a collection of writing demos for his departed friends, but spend more time with Wreckless Abandon, and it becomes clear how Campbell's taste and aesthetic meshed with Petty so thoroughly, he can write a pretty good Heartbreakers record on his own.

Campbell seems reluctant to imbue a significant imprint of his own. It leaves little that hasn’t been rehashed dozens of times before. That makes Wreckless Abandon nowhere neither as daring or distinctive as its title otherwise implies.
