    Production given over for the first time (to Sam Kassirer), the sound rises to meet the heft of Ramirez's writing, though surprisingly, through melancholic, Eighties-pitched synth and guitar. The author finds focus as well, his deeply personal laments attuned with political purpose.

    In particular, Matthew Wright’s quivering organ and synth playing evoke depth and melancholy amplified by Simon Page’s sparse yet moody guitar work. Both create space within the songs for Ramirez to fill with his growing lyrical acumen and everyman’s voice. These songs reach for radio play without cloying for it, and they deserve to be heard.

David Ramirez’ latest project is right inOkay, fine, I admit it: I am a sucker for a sad story drenched in harmonica and Americana flavour. David Ramirez’ latest project is right in that wheelhouse of Southern USA tragedy and heartache in the styles of A.A. Bondy with elements of Springsteen, Johnny Cash and Tom Waits.

    First of all - the Texas native has a gorgeous voice that he uses it in a way that tells you this guy has knocked back a few million whiskeys over his tumultuous days. The record ranges from the odd upbeat track like People Call Who They Wanna Talk To and Good Heart, however the majority of his songs are relationship based hurdles soaked in sadness. At times quiet and haunting, and others soul-crushingly loud and full of yearning, particularly the closer in with I’m Not Going Anywhere - a beautiful piano ballad that reverberates up your spine right into your tear ducts. Bravo Mr. Ramirez. I don’t think I gave this enough of a listen to cement it into my top 10, but it was close.
