It sounds like some heavy stuff, and at times it surely is. But there’s an elevation to it that comes from the pure spirit-lifting qualities of Spiro’s delivery, which is just magical from start to finish, at least if you’ve got a thing for mezzo-sopranos who have a slight rasp in their belt.

Spiro stands out from Raye, Olivia Dean, and Lola Young as the most deliberately old-fashioned. Visitor’s songs sound beamed in from an earlier decade, and this choice runs deeper than nostalgia: A young artist who presents herself as a visitor from another era dovetails with songs about things that refuse to last.
  3. It’s not difficult to envision Spiro performing these songs centre stage with a live orchestra, like the ovation-worthy starlet she’s becoming. On ‘Visitor’, though, the artist behind the voice occasionally gets lost in the spotlight.

The 10 songs they created together are solid efforts carried by intimate instrumental arrangements and her distinctive tone. But at this point in her career, Spiro could greatly benefit from having collaborators who can urge her to push past the boundaries that hold her just out of reach on Visitor.

Her much-anticipated debut album is merely competent pastiche, largely comprising Whitney-style piano ballads sung with a grittier and less agile voice.
