viagr aboys is genuinely touching. Then again, no one else besides Murphy is likely to throw the phrase “sour meat” into a love song—except maybe Tim Robinson.

The tempos stay reasonable, the hooks are sharp, and the melody lines will stick in your head so long you’ll want to contact your doctor.

Saying this is Viagra Boys' best album to date is as much a reflection of taste as a matter of quality, but Viagr Aboys shows they're only getting better at channeling their sonic havoc into workable form, and it's some sort of wild triumph.

Viagr aboys is a return to form and pushes the band’s strengths to the forefront. Although the album perhaps lacks tracks with the earworm qualities that past songs like Sports had, the band succeeds in creating a bizarre and entertaining listening experience.

Naturally, one would not expect a band whose breakthrough consisted of a list of physical activities spouted over rumbling post-punk to view ‘switching things up’ in an academic way, but the – whisper it – whimsy that runs through ‘viagr aboys’ is plenty to widen audiences’ expectations of the group.

viagr aboys is a remarkably consistent affair that invites attention and dance-steps, but not by swinging for the fences. Instead, the band commits to a steady churn of tightly written songs, each one grounded in better hooks, tighter grooves, and a more coherent sense of pacing.

To some extent, viagr aboys feels like the band resting on their laurels and leaning into what they know works best for them: simple and stupid. In reining their focus back into rancid character portraiture, they do lose some of the cutting satire that allowed their last record to so perfectly capture its cultural moment. However, they still remain one of the weirdest and wildest punk bands working today.
