The fearless artist trusts his gut, questions everything, including himself and the world he lives in, explores the limits of his guitar and his honesty to land on an all-encompassing opus that is equally undeniable and valiant.

His kind of solo song is, as its best, intentionally sparse and stubbornly full of sound. No piece is unintentional, no second gets forgotten. It is, perhaps, a bit longwinded—but hasn’t Jeff Tweedy earned the right to be? Besides, it is a wondrous thing to hear someone in their element so completely.

Despite the length—and maybe because of it—this one drew me in and kept me there. It’s warm and casual and unstudied, which is not to say that it’s not technically proficient. It’s a campfire where everyone sings and plays preternaturally well, and it’s easy to linger there right through to sunrise.

It proves to be a compelling testament to the beauty of art and what unites us together rather than tears us apart.

Twilight Override is comprised of only strange, beautiful, and threadbare originals, but the sense of glorious indulgence is straight 1970 Dylan.

While these songs rarely sound like they're brimming with joy, they act as an affirmation of life and hope even as they acknowledge the shadows, and it's his best and most rewarding solo album to date.

Even with 30 tracks, there is rarely an uninteresting moment across three LPs. Fans of Wilco and Tweedy will lap this up no doubt, and far from being throwaway, there is a sense of urgency and purpose throughout.

There’s so much good stuff here that it can take several listens before the less overtly outgoing gems (also including the wounded hush of “Love Is For Love”) emerge from Twilight Override’s mass of music.

Generous and unguarded, Twilight Override contains multitudes. [Oct 2025, p.133]

Twilight Override is a 30-song triple album of mostly mellow consolation, insightful rather than intimidating. [Nov 2025, p.26]

As a triple record, there are tracks that are less necessary than others, but remarkably it all flows as a cohesive whole, and never loses the listener's attention. [Nov 2025, p.80]

Taken together, these 30 tracks amplify and enrich each other, adding up to a whopper of an album that rewards the time you spend with it.

On a straight through listen of all three albums, it’s hard not to hope for songs like “Feel Free” to find their finish. And to that end, the shorter, punchier songs with more than a handful of contributors come out winners here.
