The Weightless Hour feels a natural successor to the sadness and grief of Snapshot, but with an added sense of hope and rebirth. It also has all the elements that made Howling Bells such a satisfying listen, while being a sufficiently different experience.

‘The Weightless Hour’ is a mature record that sounds completely at peace with its place in life.

Stein steers these heavy songs with an admirably light touch. [Jan 2025, p.89]

While Stein’s arrangements are frequently simple, they are never sparse. Despite the minimalist approach to the songs, the production still sounds full, allowing distant echoing sounds to emphasise what’s there rather than imply what’s missing.

There’s determined strumming amid “Daily Ritual”’s Americana and “Mother Natures Scorn”’s a muscular if unplugged Mazzy Star, but the title track’s almost as ethereal as its title, while “Delilah”’s waltzing, sepia psych exploits John Barry’s Midnight Cowboy theme. Campbell'n'Lanegan-ish duet Driving Nowhere (with Pat Dam Smyth) could use more tension, but the guitar spiked likes of Daily Rituals and Ceremony sow determination and fortitude. [Dec 2024, p.109]
