Longtime Darkest Hour fans should be very pleased by this record; they continue to write good songs and perform them with commitment and power. Because of their consistency, though, this album would also make a great introduction to the band's catalog.

The Human Romance is how metalcore should be: layered, dynamic, passionate. Easily the best Darkest Hour have been since "Undoing Ruin."

The Human Romance shows an experienced band trying new things and succeeding. [Mar 2011, p.92]

Nestled among these dozen tracks, though, is also some of the band's handsomest, most expansive music yet. [Mar/Apr 2011, p.88]

No, this album doesn't deviate from the melodic death metal formula one bit, but it's by all means a welcome return to form by one of the better American melodeath bands out there.

Mostly The Human Romance is just Darkest Hour reiterating a formula they already know. There's no need for a drastic overhaul, but some risks would enliven the flavors they're clearly intent on keeping.
